Lessons in the Alexander Technique
Alexander discovered that we live in almost complete ignorance of the way we use our bodies. Stress and anxiety tighten our muscles unnecessarily and interfere with the natural working of the body. We unconsciously misuse ourselves, generating habitual patterns which may adversely affect our wellbeing. Alexander Technique lessons change habitual misuse by teaching the student how to use themselves consciously with freedom and ease.
Lessons involve gentle hands-on guidance in simple every-day movements, such as sitting, standing, walking and bending, along with verbal instruction. Over time, the student learns to recognise harmful patterns as they emerge; and choose freer and more appropriate ways to respond. After the lesson, the student often has a sense of lightness and ease or freedom in movement along with a quieter and calmer state of mind. The number and frequency of lessons depends on your own needs and aims. Many people start with a lesson to see if they think the technique could help them.
